Does a broker obligated somehow to set SPAN margin? Does it have right to set a margin lower that it was required by SPAN?

  • SPAN Margins are set by the exchanges.
  • Brokers are obligated to use SPAN Margins as minimum margins for positions held overnight (or over the exchange down window)
  • Some brokers will charge a premium to SPAN Margins. In some cases this might be all the time and in other cases it may only be special cases. For example many brokers are currently charging additional margins for crude oil
  • As far as I know there are no minimum margin requirements for intra-day/day trading and Brokers have the flexibility to set their own requirements.
