I am in and out so quick options to expensive and not really necessary. If I held overnight I would use some type of offsetting position with options.

Fair enough, although I would caution that it sometimes only takes a few minutes for a limit move to occur, and very large jumps in bid/offer can sometimes be instantaneous.

I trade CL regular hours so used to it's speed etc.... Question is do you find those large jumps in bid offer to be larger in the 6:00 to 8:30 time frame?

"The day I became a winning trader was the day it became boring. Daily losses no longer bother me and daily wins no longer excited me. Took years of pain and busting a few accounts before finally got my mind right. I survived the darkness within and now just chillax and let my black box do the work."

I have been watching CL for a time now. Heres what I have seen so far
  • Asian session - usually very light volume and range bound. Order book "light".
  • Europe - volume picks up and good opportunities emerge. A few hours before the US open - nice volume from my point of view
  • US session - full steam ahead

With announcements - the order book can become very erratic and move quickly either direction as people wait for the release. A time to sit out before and after for me.

The type of jumps I'm talking about are due to unexpected world events, so they can happen at any time. Sometimes they also can be the result of economic reports that are released at predefined times and days.

I guess a clarification on the magntitude of the jump is in order. I'm talking about things that are >100 ticks ($1/barrel). If you've been trading CL for over a year, then you know what I'm talking about, because there have been two "limit-move" type events that have occured in the past year. In one instance, the price dropped $4 (400 ticks) in a couple minutes, and in the other, there was almost a limit move ($10) in a day.
