SMCJB - You trading the heating oil spreads? I am having a near record day riding Mar/Apr down after it's 30 cent blow up.

nah quiet day here. I tend to stay clear of the front spreads - prefer the back's. Relative Value instead of momentum.
I got kicked by CL yday, but due to bad settlements my PnL was actually flat. So even though not done much today I'm down purely as a consequence of market correcting poor settles.

If you don't mind me asking: what kind of size to you use in the distillates (back month spreads) and how long do you hold positions for?

I trade a lot of CL spreads (ie this post) and some NG spreads, but don't currently trade any of the other energies presently. I've traded Brent, NGLs, Electricity a little Gasoil & a little Fuel Oil in the past as well, but never really traded any RB (or HU) or HO. I think you will find most people here that do trade commodity futures mostly trade outrights.

I used to trade CL-NG spreads, on a Btu basis, (ie CL/5.8-NG) a long long time ago. All OTC and all longer dated rather than spot. Thankfully that was before, CL went to $140 and NG to <$5, which would have blown me out!

I wonder what @mfbreakout is doing today - my guess - sitting on his hands - and rightfully so

Steve

Tried 2 shorts.

#1) Short 49.78 before NY open. CL went to 49.50 area and came back up 49.90 area. Scratched it and waited for NY open.

#2) Short 50.12. Held for 1 hour. Covered some 49.62. Was looking for 49.20 area on rest. US $ got sold off and CL got stuck at ORL. Got out 49.75 on rest.

Since then sitting on hands. This MONKEY business of 30 ticks here and 20 ticks there etc while holding for long period with up and down fast moves without clear trend- is not where i find any edge for myself.

My average HOLD TIME is one hour for both gains and loss. Jerky up and down moves is not good for my trading style.

Cool stuff. If you don't mind my curiosity, what is your background? You clearly have a lot of knowledge about energy deregulation and a breadth of products, must be nice to be so diversified in the brain!
