@datahogg You can check a margins at CME website, they have margins for outright also for spreads. But each broker have little bit higher margin than is officially listed at the exchange.

Margin for a futures calendar spread definitely is significantly lower than for an outright future, as long as the expiration dates of the two futures are not too far from each other (= several years).

Just to clarify, if you have a CLF16-CLZ24 spread on as @myrrdin says there won't be that much of a drop in margin, but if you have something like CLZ18-CLZ20 on, which is still a 2 year spread, the drop in margin will still be significant. At least for CL, NYMEX has margin 'tiers'. Spreads within a tier are very low margin, spreads between tiers are dependent upon how far apart the tiers are.

But some brokers have little bit higher margin than is officially listed at the exchange.

Many brokers, charge exchange minimums, and many will even allow you even larger intraday positions.
