@bob7123 >But before I pursue the issue further, if anyone else has connection issues, please let me know. I'd like to know I'm not the only one having issues.<

Bob,

I am in Hong Kong and do have annoying random Kinetick disconnections. Been told the problem is likely due to dynamic IP but treat that as rubbish as most of Asia is on dynamic IPs. Happens several times a week.

'Only' went down once yesterday, but some days it will go out several times in quick succession and force a Ninja restart. I use IB for broker so have to restart that too which is a pain of course.

I have also been told to use the DQN client by others who have had problem but not tried it yet.

Well done on the trace-routing. That is exactly what can show that this issue has a clear problem area.

Bob and Richard,

I used to have disconnect issues and now indeed once or twice a day do loose the connection for a second or two. I have two internet providers ... can't really figure out whether it is a Kinetick issue or an internet provider / software issue at my side.

However - I strongly suspect it is a general internet issue and nothing to do with Kinetick as my IB connection sometimes goes click for a second too.

In any case - I also used to have the very annoying restart Ninja issue. Not any more.

The trick is to setup both your IB and Kinetick connections separately. Don't use the IB connection as a backup for the Kinetick or vice versa. Ninja will get in a twist about what to do if you do that.

Separate them and see if you get the occasional IB disconnect too.

Is there something special here I need to do? I always connect to Kinetick first, then IB. How do we disable backup?

Yes. General Internet loading is most likely to blame for troubles. Tonight no problem at all. I had problems with some of my own websites on a server some time ago and after reviewing who else was on same IP I found a video streaming porno site! The weekend load on that site was so heavy it killed everyone else. The hosting company soon fixed problem when I told em what was happening.

Yes always kinetick first, then IB.

Ninja Control Panel > Tools > Account Connections > (Choose Kinetick Live) > "Change" ...

You will see a screen like the below ... make sure that the Backup Connection box remains unchecked for both Kinetick and IB.

Thanks podski.

Yes, my settings are as you say. 'None' selected for backup, so that further supports a general Internet problem.

I have once had connection problems with US servers, and I could trace it down to a bottleneck of my internet provider. To identify the problem, I used ping plotter freeware. The problem occured with all connections passing through a Deutsche Telekom server located near Nuremberg, which was connected to a transatlantic line operated by NTT, which was the actual bottleneck.

There are too many people now watching youtube videos at the same time, which causes occasional traffic jams on some of the backbones.

In my case the problem seems to have resolved itself. There is little doubt in my mind that the problem was due to intermittent congestion at Cosentry's border router, but regardless is gone for now.

What I found irksome was yet another knee jerk reaction from IQFeed that the problem must not be theirs.

Previous to this, I was held up for months releasing a BaBAR update due to an unrelated issue because they spent a lot more time proving it wasn't their problem [it was] than trying to fix it or even be objective and consider that problems can occur anywhere.

Separately, I have a dedicated server in the states. In the past, I have had connection issues to it from Macedonia. I contacted the host provider, they were able to contact their backbone provider and it was fixed through some routing table magic. This despite the fact that packets were being dropped in Europe. Just because packets may be dripped on the links between a host and you does not necessarily mean that competent (and proactive) network engineers can't address the problem.

If people having problems want to run ping plotter and post results here, I think that can only help everyone to understand what is going on.

I appreciate your comments.

I'd like to remind everyone that IQFeed provides support 24 hrs/day M-F at [email protected] and 800# support from 6:30am-6:00pm CST M-F, and we are more than willing to escalate issues to engineers to research cloud issues. As you can imagine, it is tough to do this for a report from a single person. Instead, we try to work with that person to narrow down what could be causing the issue. We have the ability to look at the servers and see what type of disconnects are happening from that individual. If it is determined that it’s a link between the customer and us (a link out of our control), there is not much we can do. I wish it were a case where our engineers could call a Level 3 engineer and say “hey, you have a bad hop” but it just doesn’t work that way.

We make every effort to ensure our support reps assume an issue is our own first. Part of their training is to focus on troubleshooting, not passing blame to 3rd parties. If at any time you feel this isn’t happening or you aren’t receiving the level of service you deserve, feel free to escalate to me via private message or direct call/email.

Robert

Thanks for your input Robert. Much appreciated.

Having been told by Kinetick reps that dynamic IPs can be a problem, I will track my IP while trading to see if IP address does actually change at time of disconnections. I will use What's My IP Address site to check this.

I did think that dynamic IPs changed only at initial connection time, but maybe they can change while actually online? Maybe this does indeed throw a wobble into data feed?

Robert: Could you give me your view on this? Does a dynamic IP really present a problem for your servers/system?

You are referring to DHCP lease time. If you remain connected your IP should not change between leases.

If so, then dynamic IPs should not be an issue for data connection, right? I will know for sure next time I lose data connection, and if IP has changed, then DHCP is not working as you say.
