I have a question about margin for intraday trading. Is it possible to get a margin call for intraday trading or get close out by your brokerage if your losses limit a certain limit within the day? Or they will just let it run and close your position at the end of the day if it is still not closed by yourself?

It is real time, any time of day. Most brokerages that are discussed here on the forum will close your position instantaneously as your margin is exhausted. If you are a "big client" of a big firm, like you call in your million dollar orders by phone, etc, then some of these firms will give you a call before liquidating your position to give you a chance to deposit more funds.

it goes like this
cell phone rings...
you: hello
broker: hi, your balance shows a negative number what are you going to do about it
you: lets me think about it
broker: ok but dont be too long
you: ok close it and tell me how much I have to wire in
broker: (lower his voice) ...
you: what!

Thanks guys for the answers.

Another question, am I right to understand if I have an open winning position and an open losing position, my account balance will be the net of the two positions?

So as long as my profit from one position is large enough to net off my losing position, the brokerage will not liquidate my losing position?
