Hi Guys,

Please give me your take on your connectivity issues, latency and reliability in your areas

I am with WebAfrica and MWEB through ADSL and Vodacom, CELL-C for 3G if and when Telkom drops the ball. I continue to be disappointed in the reliability, quality and general lack of service we face. Having just about every backup possible has saved me a fair amount but its never been ideal.

I recently had a chat with someone that is working with CELL-C and they plan to roll out a low latency 4G (LTE) 100meg service at some point in the future and it seems sooner then later. If this is true it will be light years ahead of what we have and to consider everywhere else in the world considering wireless is just not an option.

Lets keep each other up to date on any of these issues

Stay and Trade Safe

I agree with you completely. I am frustrated mostly by two things, our lack of options in SA (especially fixed line), and consistancy.

We dont have any other options for adsl than to use Telkom for the line. My isp does everything they can to provide a good quality service but in the end it's up to telkom. I have recently been experiencing big performance ups and downs on my 4mb adsl line. From day to day, hour to hour it's either fantantastic or barely useable. There have been times over the last month or two where I cant even watch a big mike webinar because I cant buffer fast enough. I eventually called my isp and they've changed a few things on my line which seems to have improved things. But I along with the rest of us am still at the mercy of Telkom.

Keep us up to date with anything you hear around 4G. Sounds great.

I will keep an eye on the Cell-C 4G developments in the mean time check out Vox ( Vox Telecom ) has a data product Fishbone, its a Line Bonder which combines multiple independent access lines, through proprietary line aggregation technologies, into a single high-capacity corporate access solution offering a lower cost alternative to traditionally high-priced access technologies, such as Diginet. I am thinking of trying it out. Its a bit pricey though at R5k whats that about $450 thats just insane, my mate in HK pays about $50 US for a 100 meg low latency line. Anyways check it out.

That line bonder from Vox looks interesting. It is always sad though to see what we are expected to pay for connectivity here. The Vox offer would be overkill for a humble retail trader like me (who isn't yet full time), but it definitly looks like it would be appealing to some.

Hi DarkPoolTrading,
likewise for me - overkill for a 'humble retail trader like me'
For now I am completely fine with my 1 Meg AdSL and M-Web uncapped. I am thinking about going up to the 4 meg option, but that is more for keeping the Apple TV streaming happily.

Good to hear Telkom are working towards 20Mbps and 40Mbps options. But it remains to be seen what the pricing will be like on these. Personally, im not hopeful that it will be affordable for the general public (at least not for a few years after launch).

As a Saffa living and trading in Singapore, I really feel for you guys back home, your overhead on a fast connection down there is a big nut to crack just to b/e.

I've got a 100Mbps fibre connection for the equivalent of USD 63/mo, and that includes, basic sat TV package, mobile and land line thrown in.

It's not just telkom, so many people have sown up exclusive rights to services and import goods, that there is just no healthy competition to give the man in the street a fair deal.

Very true, unfortunately. Us poor Saffa's live in hope as things get better at a fraction of the pace of the 1st world.

Out of interest, how long have you been in Singapore and did you trade in SA before leaving?
