Thanks: 46 given,
I've been here just over 2 years now, I wasn't sure of the time zone issues but it actually suits trading the US markets very well, things kick off from around 830 pm till 11-12'ish, so can do a bit of the family thing after work , keep the missus happy before going off to the 'cave' as she calls it to trade.
I did trade from SA, actually back towards the late 90's when we still had to phone the states and give futures orders over the phone, dial-up was still relatively new then. The I left to work in the UK to get more trading capital and then went back for a few years , traded on dial-up - those were interesting telkom bills.
Last time I traded in SA was in March on holiday and with ADSL line was fine for my style of trading.
Thanks for the links there bud, that's going to be so good when its finally available. Not much more info on the Cell_C 4G network but I am sure that will be available early next year if they want it to make an impact.
Just checking in with any fellow South African traders still around on here. With all the adsl upgrades and price cuts from Telkom over the last year or so, our connectivity options have improved substantially. Obviously nothing compared to the US, asia etc. But getting there...
If you are scalping for ticks every few minutes then you are trying to compete against HFT's. In which case doing that remotely from South Africa is out of the question.
However if you are intraday position trading then you will have no problem.
Keep in mind that provided your orders are held on the server and that you use server held OCO's, then once you've submitted your order it goes into the queue along with everyone else at the exchange. It doesn't matter whether your're in the US, South Africa or on the moon, your order is sitting in the same queue.
Of course if your orders are held on your own PC and only submitted to the market when they are touched, that is another story completely.
Again, if you are not scalping then you will have no problem at all.
Diversification is the only free lunch

I alternate between living in Mossel Bay and the US, trading the NQ, and have never had any real issues with latency in either location. The ping here is usually around 200-250 and about 60 in Florida and I never notice a difference. I do trade more forex though these days when I'm in SA because of the time zones and those orders are filled in the UK. And by the way I use Telkom at 4mbps and most of my trading is off 5/15 min charts.

Could we please chat concerning Platforms, data feed and brokerage whilst residing in South Africa.
For instance using NT Platform & NT as Brokerage for futures trading? and if I want to trade JSE stocks which broker to use?
If i could be shown or be put on the right track, it will be appreciated.
I found this forum and thread and I would like to find out of any of you are still active on here?
We are trying to reach out to any prop traders in SA as we are looking to put together an event for professional traders in Jhb next year. We hope to bring out some top local and international speakers/traders and cover a range of topics that traders will find valuable.
Please have a look at our media links to get an idea of what we are trying to achieve:
Please make contact with us as we would value your input on content and topics that you would find valuable, and if nothing else help create a larger trading community.
