  • We firmly believe in and encourage sharing. The holy grail is within you, we can help you find it.
  • We expect our members to participate and become a part of the community. Help yourself by helping others.

Where do I find information about Financial Instruments?

In my reading I have yet to come across a reference guide to all the different financial instruments.
  • Structure of futures/forex contract symbols, what they mean.
  • How to access each symbol, on what exchange, special requirements?
  • trading hours for each exchange/contract as well as their peak times (volume).
  • Any special rules or regulations to be aware of between each exchange?

If anyone has a book or site recommendation that can help answer these questions and anything else along those lines, please point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

I neglected to explain my purpose. I am at a point where I am now learning Ninjatrader to prepare for simulation. My next step is to decide what I would like to trade and when, adjust my schedule to fit, then actually have the knowledge to be able to access whatever security at optimal times be it open/close/peak.

Thank you.

Your broker should be able to provide all the links you need. If you don't have one, start investigating different brokers. Almost all of them have the same links to the main exchanges.

But to get you started, here is one place to start:
CME Group - Futures & Options Trading for Risk Management

Like the previous poster mentioned, contact your broker and data providor for information about available markets, exchange fees etc..

You can find a lot of information on the exchanges' websites:

CME Group - Futures & Options Trading for Risk Management

Eurex - Europe's Global Financial Marketplace

https://www.theice.com/homepage.jhtml

If you're contemplating trading on the CME, get this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470137711/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=mark01f-...&creativeASIN=0470137711

what to trade

If you are starting out and looking for what to trade. it all depends on what times can you trade and what is your risk tolerance. but something is for certain, the instrument has to be liquid enough, volatility should be there as well as it fits your account. most of the well known instruments will qualify for a good instrument to trade but the time will play big factor. So search for best times to trade whichever instrument you will go for and if the best time fits yours then you are good to go.

Happy trading guys
