Hi Mike and co.,

I have dabbled in trading over the years, but i would now like to take a more professional approach to it all.

Right now, i am only interested in observing different strategies and learning the art of backtesting and system development.

Up until now my backtests were time consuming and consisted of going over past charts manually and writing down the results on a pad 'n paper.

Then, i stepped it up to creating a spreadsheet in excel that will do all the calculations for me and allow for flexibility in changing values for exits, stops, MA values etc.
I have finished my spreadsheet, with the help of a private tutor, but have now come to realise it's limitations.

The main thing for me is i was limited to daily historical data and this ensured there was way too much room for error when determining if a stoploss was hit first or a profit target.

Add a few other limitations like visual authentication, portfolio testing and multiple instruments and i began to realise that excel may not be the best way to go about it.

Basically i just want to be able to run fairly accurate back tests. Why does this seem so hard?

I don't want to subscribe to a data vendor at this stage, i have used esignal in the past, but i was no where near being profitable and i was spending hundreds of dollars a month on data which was a lost cause.

I have looked everywhere on the internet and can't seem to find any free historical intraday data to import into NINJATRADER.

I am now willing to pay disktrading.com $20 an instrument for the privilige of historical data. (if anyone knows of NINJATRADER ready historical data please let me know how to get my hands on it).

My efforts are now focused on learning how to use NINJATRADER. i only want to use it for backtesting for now. I think the help and support for new users is terrible, and i find it really disheartening to read posts on forums from programmers and trading experts that are having problems with NINJATRADER. If they can't do it how the hell am i supposed to??

If there is anyone in Australia that i could talk with or help me get things started i would really appreciate the chance to learn from your experiences.

Other than that i guess i will have to just wait until i get some historical data into the platform and start to learn it from there.

I look foward to your posts,

Michael

Hello traders. I found Big Mike's Trading a while back but have really not been on the site much until recently because of a friend referring to the site often. This is a wonderful site with a ton of good information. I've been trading futures and stocks for about 8 yrs now and a couple of years ago finally acheived consistent profitability. It was a struggle and I almost quit on more than one occasion. I finally dumped all but the most simple indicators and started trading Price Action exclusively. In my opinion........Price Action is the only reliable way to trade these futures markets. Can't really say that about stocks but it is very reliable for the futures. Takes a lot of screen time though. At least it did for me anyway. Good luck to all and I hope to be a regular visitor to the site from here on out.

Dear Traders,

I'm a beginner part-time trader. So far I mostly experimented with options only. I'm interested in risk management, system development, and trading ideas.

Thanks BigMike for the blog and the forum.

Hello all

I'm new to trading and have only recently discovered I seem to have a passion for it. So far I've been trading options and some ETFs but I am looking to explore what NT has to offer. Thanks for providing all the great info here! I look forward to contributing what I can.

Hi everyone!

futures.io (formerly BMT) was suggested to me by someone on another forum. I'm a C# programmer and have dabbled with futures and stocks over the past several years. I currently work for a medium sized trading firm and am looking into learning more about the trading side.

I've used NT for the past year and started a NinjaScript consultancy service that I work on during the evenings and weekends. Just meeting and interacting with various traders has been pleasure enough.

I'd like to know how some of these basic indicators work and what makes traders think that some of these mathematical indicators would work...Personally I'm of the camp that TA and Indicators work because everyone else is using them.

I'm looking into trading the ES using NT. Let me know if you have any questions regarding NinjaScript. I'm looking to learn as well =).

thanks!

I have been trading for the last 3 years, with recent success, due to finally applying discipline on a second to second basis. Look forward to hearing new ideas and being part of good things.
Cheers, Dtrader999

Hello fellow traders. I've been lurking at Big Mike's for a while now, and I decided it was time to introduce myself. A friend of mine got me interested in trading almost exactly a year ago, and I have spent many hours devoted to it since then. I set up a TOS account, but I have not yet funded it (the money is safely tucked away in my savings account). I am pretty hesitant to make that first trade, and don't want to do so until I feel like I know what I am doing.

I am a software engineer by trade with 10+ years experience in different languages including C, Java, .NET and others. The first time I opened a trading platform and realized I could use my programming skills to help my trading, my jaw nearly hit the floor. It seems like this hobby is practically made for me!

TOS ThinkScript is too limited for my tastes, so I am using NinjaTrader and programming a lot of my own indicators. I have 1 month of ES tick data from Aug-Sept 2009, and I keep coding indicators and scenarios. I am always searching for that perfect set of indicators to give me that much-needed edge. And the search continues....

I look forward to joining this community of traders. I have much to learn, but I enjoy this and hope to one day feel like I know what I am doing.

Dan
