Hi,

I am a software developer / beginning trading. I actually worked for several years at a medium sized investment company, during which time I got to work on software for derivatives trading (cash overlay/hedging with equity and other derivatives,) and algorithmically building equity portfolios (not trying to sound smart - the stuff I did was actually pretty simple.)

So far I've _almost_ blown out my account twice and am limping along from my last misadventure now. This isn't my life savings, but it's enough money that I will cry like a little girl - for several days - if I succeed in blowing out my account. Think "really nice car money." Both times, the near blow outs were completely me - human emotion and snap decisions making at it's best. I should know better, after years of working in the investment industry, with all the checks they have, and all the books I've read on trading. But, I am not going to dwell on my mistakes, other than to take the lesson.

I am looking for ways to trade algorithmically. Sitting in front of a computer watching lines move up and down is a little too heart palpitation inducing for me, and I am not as good at managing my emotions as a computer is. I've been working with the Interactive Brokers API, in both .NET and java (mainly using clojure.) I've been trying out different strategies, writing programs for them, and backtesting them. So far, I've only had the guts to let my programs analyze data and let me do the trading, but I hope to move past that soon, as I've missed some nice moves because I am slower.

I should also say I am a skeptic: I find it difficult to believe a lot of the TA stuff I read about (but I really liked "Evidence-Based Technical Analysis"): I think understanding the factors that cause something is a lot more interesting (and reliable!) than just observing that "the FOO goes up when the BAR goes down." There are real, reliable (in the medium term) inefficiencies in markets that are exploitable, and finding and understanding these is where my interest lies.

On twitter, I am @cbilson, g+ cbilson. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in discussing any of the above.

I'm currently in training as an investor.
I'm just learning, but some of it is starting to click.
To start, I'm mostly interested in options investing - perhaps using swing trades.

With everyone's help here, I plan to become a gazillionaire soon!

Greetings!

Glad to have found this useful site. I'm pretty new to trading having started sim trading last fall. I've recently gone live trading eminis and am really enjoying it.

Learning something new every day both in these forums and elsewhere.

I'm trying to take it slow, exercise patience, and make sure my mistakes aren't too costly.

I look forward to interacting with you all!

Cheers,

hohnsolo

I'm Bob from Sydney. I subscribe to other trading forum sites and happened to come across Big Mike's through one of these.

I've been trading for many years and look forward to exchanging stock and forex trading ideas.

Hello Everyone:

I am just getting started and very green! I am using Ninja Trader because it's the only one I found that I can really understand. I use the NO Gap Range Bars because it makes scense to me, but I'm haveing a lot of trouble learning what to look for to get in the market. I have a live feed but I havent layed down the money yet, I'm trading the S&P 500 Emini and It's kicking my rear! Any help would be great.

Thanks;
KP

Welcome, You'll like it here. Do yourself a HUGE favor and don't trade with real money until you have a full understanding of things and can paper/demo trade profitably. There are plenty of threads here on all different topics which will set you on the right path. Learn basic price action and money management and go through the psychology threads here, they will help you face the demons you will likely meet.
Regards, Kbit

I'm a futures trader, living and trading in Chicago. My background is in technology, but I am fortunate enough to have developed a lucrative means of extracting regular net gains from my chosen markets.

I appreciate the promise of this board, enjoy a level of camaraderie, and plan to contribute within my own necessary boundaries.
