Non-farm Payroll

Non-farm Payroll (commonly abbreviated NFP) is a study by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

It reports, on a monthly basis, how many jobs were created in the United States in the prior month, excluding certain job categories, such as farm workers and government employees.

Among the various economic metrics, the Non-Farm Payrolls Report is widely regarded as one of the most influential indicators. It usually tends to have both a short-term effect as well as a long-term impact (as an aggregate) across a wide range of market asset classes, as one of the leading indicators that the Federal Reserve use to adopt key economic policies which in turn - given the role the US economy plays at a global scale - have the potential to affect the world's economy.

The NFP report is generally released on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 Eastern Standard Time.

Along with the key headline figure, other employment metrics are released, including

  • Unemployment rate
  • Average Hourly Earnings
  • Any revisions to prior month's release of NFP report
