Thank you, The Trend,

To follow up on your suggestion, I did check what TJ had to offer:
"The limit is not hard coded...
it is here for performance reasons
but if you have hyper-fast machine you can adjust the limit by
creating the following (DWORD) key in the registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TJP\Broker\Settings\MaximumNumberOfBars

My question to TJ was & his answer:
If running 64 bit, should I use "DWORD" or "QWORD" for the new entry?

DWORD value should be used.

Best regards,
Tomasz Janeczko
amibroker.com

Thanks to All for all of your posts, a much valued resource.
Thanks to Big Mike for pushing JT into where AB downloads
tick data faster than NT.

Cordially, loslo

Hi, I am from Italy and this is my first post.

1) How long have you been using AmiBroker?
my first licence is dated 2010 July
2) What are your favorite features of AmiBroker?
speed (but this is obtained also loading all data in memory, so there are some problems with long intraday data
series) and portfolio backtesting
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in AmiBroker that you could not do without?
portfolio backtesting
4) Do you use AmiBroker in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
only simulation for now (and AB has not many broker interface at least with italian's brokers)
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does AmiBroker help you with this?
discretionary, and I am studying algorithmic. AB helps to test quickly ideas.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use AmiBroker?
For me it was hard (although I was a programmer), AFL is simple but powerful vector language, similar to C.
I think it requires many months of use to be used correctly, but this is due to powerfull functionalities
7) How do you rate AmiBroker's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
excelent, usually you get response in 24 hours max
8) Do you believe AmiBroker is competitively priced?
Its is very competitively priced for its functionalities
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for AmiBroker?
Excellent support from Yahoo Amibroker User Group

Regards
Luca

Hi guys,

As part of my research for the upcoming "Where to start as a trader (Part II: Trading Platforms)" webinar, I want to solicit input from members about the platforms they use.

If you could give me some information I would appreciate it.

1) How long have you been using AmiBroker?
About 2 years
2) What are your favorite features of AmiBroker?
Many Charts at once, Scanning/Exploring; Writing your own code; Succinct language; Speed; Agnostic attitude about where data is stored
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in AmiBroker that you could not do without?
None are deal breaker, but little bit annoying.
Ami saves AFL when you save chart or Analysis Projects files and I wish there was a way to turn this off. Besides wasting disk space, this makes making corrections very risky unless you are careful

4) Do you use AmiBroker in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Simulation mostly. but do trade manually by looking at what Ami shows. Ami only supports Interactive broker for live trading and I do not have account with them
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does AmiBroker help you with this?
Isn't algorithm part of discretion?
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use AmiBroker?
Fairly easy. I was once a C programmer.
7) How do you rate AmiBroker's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Never bothered to check
8) Do you believe AmiBroker is competitively priced?
Absolutely! I always like s/w that do not have running costs hooked to it. If ever there was a job opening at Amibroker, I'd be first one at the door on the night before.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for AmiBroker?
Excellent. I myself am a big contributor to the community, so this kinda sounds like me praising myself

If you could give me some information I would appreciate it.

1) How long have you been using AmiBroker?
It replaced TradeStation 2000i in 2009 - had been trialling it the year prior
2) What are your favorite features of AmiBroker?
Speed
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in AmiBroker that you could not do without?
Independence from broker and no monthly fees and no communication back to the vendor every time you start it up (no chance of taking your studies with it)
4) Do you use AmiBroker in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Both
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does AmiBroker help you with this?
Was algorithmic have become discretionary
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use AmiBroker?
Not too hard, help from both Thomasz and Marcel and the help from the yahoo forum was fantastic
7) How do you rate AmiBroker's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Superb
8) Do you believe AmiBroker is competitively priced?
Yes, I even bought an new license while not needing it
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for AmiBroker?
Superb

Even if someone before you has said something similar to how you feel, please reply anyway. I am gauging response by popularity so need to hear from multiple people even with similar feelings.

If you have any other thoughts to add please do so. Let's try to keep the thread on-topic, focusing on why you use the platform and leave all other discussion to other more appropriate threads.

Amibroker has been a gem hidden from a lot of traders.

1) How long have you been using AmiBroker?
Since 2003

2) What are your favorite features of AmiBroker?
Backtesting and charting

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in AmiBroker that you could not do without?
Fast backtesting and easy programming (if you know the vector computing)

4) Do you use AmiBroker in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Both.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does AmiBroker help you with this?
Algo auto trader through amibroker.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use AmiBroker?
It does need some programming skill if you want to use it to full potential. However, for charting and basic backtesting, everybody should be able to learn it.

7) How do you rate AmiBroker's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
Superb. Response in less than 24 hours normally. Some times in a few minutes.

8) Do you believe AmiBroker is competitively priced?
Too inexpensive. Should charge 2-3 times more IMO.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for AmiBroker?
Superb using Yahoo Group mailing list.

1) How long have you been using AmiBroker?

Since 2011

2) What are your favorite features of AmiBroker?

Quantitative analysis (made easier than other platforms). Very fast portfolio testing.

3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in AmiBroker that you could not do without?

High performance strategy, portfolio, optimization, and walk-forward testing.

4) Do you use AmiBroker in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?

Simulation mode - AmiBroker is only hooked up to my data feed (DTN/IQ)- not a brokerage.

5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does AmiBroker help you with this?

Mostly algorithmic. I run extensive optimization analysis on AmiBroker, then convert to PowerLanguage on MultiCharts. MultiCharts is much, much slower for performing optimizations. At some point I would like to see AmiBroker executing trades on something besides Interactive Brokers. Although I know someone who's attempted to auto-trade directly to IB from AmiBroker, they've decided to discontinue because of the architecture of AmiBroker. It's just doesn't produce trade signals like Ninja or MultiCharts. This has something to do with the array based structures in AmiBroker that make it blazing fast for analysis as opposed to how MultiCharts is setup.

6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use AmiBroker?

It wasn't that easy to get started. I ended up reading Introduction to AmiBroker (Second Edition) by Howard Bandy. This used to be a hardbound book, but is now free for download on Bandy's site (Blue Owl Press). In my opinion, this is required reading if you get AmiBroker. Once I got started with the handy little features of AmiBroker, comfortable with AFL and the associated analysis, it has become one of the primary go-to platforms for me.

7) How do you rate AmiBroker's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?

I've only had a couple questions, but they are quick to answer emails - usually within hours.

8) Do you believe AmiBroker is competitively priced?

Absolutely! For what you get with AmiBroker it's phenomenal for the asking price.

9) How do you rate the community support that exists for AmiBroker?

It's still a fairly small community - especially compared to NinjaTrader for example. AmiBroker has been participating with Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities for years, and has open code for every article that comes out. All of the books from Howard Bandy on Quantitative Systems, Mean Reversion are some of the best trading books I've ever read. His newest book on quantitative systems incorporates Python models for machine learning. My other observation is that AmiBroker is more popular outside of the United States. I've seen some sites that are based in other languages besides english. There's also quite a following in places like India, Australia, Indonesia, and of course Europe (since it originally came from Poland).
